Ok, we have to confess that this recipe which is part of our series for student meals is not one for our vegans or vegetarian friends. But it is one for the electricity conscious and meat lovers amongst us. We discovered Moink Rolls and since then, we think they’re an awesome sushi dish that would make a super starter or even a great main course. Essentially, a Moink Roll is a bacon, beef and cheese ‘sushi roll’. It’s madness we know, but it’s also a great way to practice your ‘sushi’ skills before you progress to actually making sushi (which is a lot harder!) It’s a total meat fest, so veggie lovers, look away now!
What you’ll need to make two rolls:
- 12 Slices of Bacon (No doubt a full pack will do the trick)
- 500g minced beef (or lamb, whichever you prefer)
- BBQ spices (Braai spice works well, or any beefy and BBQ flavoured seasoning)
- 2 sticks (thick cubed sticks) of Emmental cheese. You can try out different cheeses here too
- Sweet Chilli sauce – enough for basting and for a chilli dip at the end
- Roasted onions – but super roasted so they’re crispy.
- Crushed potato chips (plain salted) or crushed nachos
How to make sushi like a pro
Right, the method can be totally your own. Dress up if you like, make it a spectacle, wow your guests…it’s totally up to you how you do this…but here’s our guide just in case:
- Roll out your sushi mat (or a piece of flexible plastic) and get a crowd to watch you
- Place your bacon strips neatly next to each other down the mat
- In a separate bowl, season your mince with your BBQ spices
- Flatten the mince mixture over the bacon strips, tightly
- Add your large strips of cubed cheese on the mince, near the end of the mat
- Roll like a sushi king and impress your guests. Tell them it was more difficult than it looked.
- Prepare your braai (making sure your coals underneath are hot) and make sure that there’s some foil under the grill to catch the dripping juices. This is the eco no-electricity version of the recipe. Place the two rolls on the braai like a braai master.
- OR – place in the oven with a cover over the meat and cook at 180 degrees
- Either way, cook for around 25 minutes and then glaze / baste with sweet chilli sauce
- Cook a further 10 minutes and then glaze again after 5 minutes.
- When cooked, remove from the heat and show off your rolls to your guests.
- Get two platters ready – one with crushed chips/nachos and one with friend onions
- Roll in either of the two
- Slice into portions (like pinwheels) and plate up with a dipping sauce like sweet chilli or BBQ
- Serve with pride.
And if you’re still not 100% sure how to do this, here’s a little cheat clip which shows you every step to making Moink Rolls that are simply delicious! Enjoy.
