Having qualified managers in the workplace who are able to assess and monitor their team’s performance creates a wonderful working environment with a nurturing undertone. When staff know exactly how to perform their job roles, they have the confidence to create a wow factor for guests. Assessors play a vital role in ensuring that staff know exactly what is required to carry out their jobs successfully. Assessor Training is something that many hotels are investing in today because of the many benefits to staff, managers and business owners.
An assessor’s role is to collect evidence about how staff are performing their job tasks in the workplace in order to indicate whether or not they have the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out their job role correctly. So essentially, an assessor is checking to see that staff know what to do. Collecting such evidence can take many different forms – conducting assessments on paper or reviewing and assessing practical applications of a job function. This also includes feedback and assessment reviews with staff.
Based on a set of strict criteria laid down by the South African Qualifications Authority, assessors need to undergo very specific training themselves in order to show competence as assessors in their area of expertise. Once certified competent by an accredited training provider such as International Hotel School, assessors are able to work for a variety of hospitality businesses, hotels, hotel groups or independently, in order to carry out evaluations and assessments of staff on behalf of the company.
There are also benefits for employers who sign up staff members for Assessor Training: Provided all criteria are met in regard to the employer’s Workplace Skills Plan (and their Skills Development Levies are up-to-date), a percentage-based rebate can be claimed by the company for training carried out. Additionally, the latest requirements for BBBEE Skills Development points necessitate companies in almost all industries to spend 6% of their payroll on Skills Development.
