München plays host to the annual Oktoberfest, which is a Bavarian tradition that has become an international beer festival destination. Though the beer is really good, there is a lot more to Oktoberfest than just the beer – and hosting an international event of this magnitude takes a lot of doing.

In a way, the persona of Bavaria evolves to become superhuman-like during this time of year, providing an event fit for the ‘hero’ in everyone!

Interesting insights into Oktoberfest hospitality

The Bavarian waitresses have super powers; this is no joke. They can carry not one or two or three, but sometimes up to 10 Maß in one go! Note: a Maß is a mug of beer that holds around one litre of beer! That’s almost 10 litres, which tends to be chartered in a tent full of people!

They also have superhero memories, with the ability to handle food and beverage orders that could possibly take up a whole page of notes! If you’re going to be a waitress at the Oktoberfest, you need to be up there in the realm of the immortally gifted!

The beer itself is super strong – an elixir that has a big kick. It’s cunning because you don’t really feel its immediate effects – so be warned! There’s a lot of beer consumed during this time of the year, and local brewers are usually working at full capacity to cater for the large demand for their finest brew. It’s an interesting passage for brewers as it’s a great time to showcase their beer to an international audience!

The accommodation is more fitting for a king or a royal as opposed to a bat-cave, but who really wants to share their resting place with a bunch of bats? Hotels, guest houses, hostels, and even couch surfing is on offer, as Internet sites are now becoming a central marketplace to book and seek accommodation for the droves of visitors.

A Bavarian beer education

Hidden treasures of the Oktoberfest lie in wait in the surrounding areas of München. The Alps, lakes, and castles leave every person that’s experienced them breathless.

Catering for individuals who are journeying to these areas is vital, and the same level of hospitality is needed as at the beer festival itself. It’s the restaurants and Bavarian beer gardens that bring about the flavour to the peripheral pleasures of the Oktoberfest!

And the local welcome! The memorable times that one has with the locals, be it at the festival itself or whilst adventuring through Bavaria or the rest of Germany … it’s an atmosphere that spreads throughout the country. Whilst everyone is festive in their celebrations, one can’t help but join in. From wearing the local dress or outfit – remember to become one with the leather pants as Superman did with his tights, to wearing the now popular heart-shaped Lebkuchen. Embracing the local traditions gives you a small but personal sense of the Bavarian culture. As a nation that’s welcoming all year round, their presence is especially felt during the time of the beer festival.

Oktoberfest is more than just a beer event; it’s an invitation to a cultural education – Bavarian style!
