What does a Human Resources Manager do?

A Human Resources Manager oversees the Human Resources Department of a hotel. The Human Resources (HR) Department is responsible for the employees of the hotel. It’s their job to hire, fire, train and maintain employees and employee relations.

Human Resources Manager responsibilities

The Human Resources Manager is responsible for:
•    Recruitment and retention (hiring and keeping employees)
•    Training and development (improving employees’ skills)
•    Compensation and benefits (salaries and job perks)
•    Employee and labour relations (relationships between all employees, including management)
•    Policy creation and implementation (creating and carrying out of hotel policies)
•    Implementation, achievement and maintenance of hotel goals
•    Growth and development of individuals
among many other duties.

Who does the Human Resources Manager report to?

The Human Resources Manager reports to the General Manager.

Who reports to the Human Resources Manager?

The HR assistant or HR team.

Qualifications

A Human Resources Manager must have a diploma/degree in HR/IR and years of experience in the hospitality and HR fields.

Skills

An HR Manager must:
•    Communicate well
•    Be a good team player
•    Be patient and diplomatic
•    Have outstanding interpersonal skills
•    Think strategically
•    Have strong business acumen

Working conditions

A Human Resources Manager works more traditional hours than the majority of hospitality workers. He/she is likely to work Monday-Friday, 8-5. Some hospitality properties require that the HR Manager lives-in (lives on the property).

Earning potential

The earning potential of a Human Resources Manager depends on the hotel he’s working for. Salaries range from about R15 000 to R26 000 and depend on whether the position is live-in or not.

Job opportunities

A Human Resources Manager is necessary for most hotels and hospitality properties with a decent sized staff. Jobs are available in cities, at holiday destination resorts (hotels like remote ski resorts) and on cruiseliners.
