What is hospitality?
Hospitality is all about hosting guests and providing for people’s needs. As a career, hospitality can take many forms. It includes everything from owning and running hotels, to working as a chef in a restaurant, to organising events, and a multitude of things in between. The hospitality industry serves people all over the globe when it comes to accommodation, travel, tourism, eating out and entertainment in general.
What kind of future would the hospitality industry offer me?
There are endless possibilities in the world of hospitality. Let’s have a look at some of the career opportunities and places you could work.
Career opportunities
- Hotelier– Own and manage a hotel or a collection of hotels
- Management– Classy hotels, beach resorts, country lodges, posh restaurants etc.
- Event planning, organising and executing– Weddings, functions, concerts
- Project development– Planning and developing new holiday accommodation/entertainment venues, sports facilities or theme parks
- Entrepreneur– Starting up and managing your own business
- Human Resources Management– Managing people within a company, including employment, development of abilities, and basically watching over people for both their and their company’s best interest
- Public Relations Officer– Looking after the public image of a company and managing communications between the company and the public
- Tour guide– Leading tour groups of people around areas of interest, teaching and informing about areas, buildings, local history, places to visit, etc. (This can also apply to field guides who lead people in tours around game reserves or on bird-watching expeditions)
- Marketing– Marketing of hotels, spas, restaurants, etc.
- Sales– Increasing sales of hospitality “products” like time spent at game lodges, wellness centres or eateries
- Chef– Creating menus, preparing and cooking foods for restaurants or catering, training and teaching students to cook
