The International Hotel School is making dreams come true once again!

Once again, The International Hotel School is in the process of hosting its annual national Bursary Competition’s which is available to Matric learners with a passion for the hospitality industry. This week sees the final round of the Durban leg being held at Tala Private Game Reserve.

After an intense selection process and semi-final round, only five finalists proceeded through to the final round, which is popularly known as “Boot Camp”. Here, the matric students will work hard in a four day boot camp, working in each department of the hotel – leading up to the judging day, which is to be held on Friday, July 18th, 2014.  Only one winner will be chosen in each provincial leg of the competition to have their full tuition fees paid for – for any IHS programme they wish to study, for the duration of the programme. The prize value nationally totals close to R750 000!

For most learners who are prepared to work hard, a career in hospitality creates endless opportunities. The nationally and internationally recognised qualifications that graduates receive, from South Africa’s leading private hospitality education provider, their future can be everything they’ve ever dreamed of which is one of the reasons why IHS have hosted this competition for the past eight years.

The five finalists in the Durban region are as follows: Carley Sclanders, Sarah Schickering, Kerusha Naidoo, Candace Lategan and Tanya Khuzwayo

Derek Grose, the General Manager of Tala Private Game Reserve says that it is a pleasure to be hosting the finals of this competition at his property. He hopes that through his time spent with the five learners during the boot camp, he will be able to impart his passion for the property and industry onto each of them. “ I would like each of them to realise that this industry is not always an easy road to reach, but in the end it is well worth the journey,” he adds.

With a number of qualifications under his belt and a wealth of experience in various departments –having worked at Makalali Game Reserve, Sun City Resorts The Sun City Hotels, Sun City Resorts (Palace) South Africa, Hilton Hotel Durban, Singita Private Game Reserve, Sibaya Casino, Royal Livingstone (Zambia), Kalahari Sands (Namibia), Bush Tavern Umdloti, Cascades Sun City, Palace of the Lost City, Port Ghalib, Coastlands on the Ridge, Coastlands Umhlanga, The Pavilion Conference Center, Zanzibar Beach Resort and now Tala Private Game Reserve, Grose lives by the motto “live life with high integrity, never lie and treat all with respect.”

For him, his most memorable moment in his career thus far has been being able to travel and meet interesting people along the way and most of all, being based at Tala where he is able to appreciate the natural surroundings that we all so often take for granted.

This year will be the first time Tala will host The International Hotel School’s “Ticket to Life” Bursary competition and as the General Manager and host of this prestigious competition, Grose looks forward to a successful week of training and assisting in making one learner’s hospitality dream come true!
