As winter creeps in, our food habits start to change. There’s nothing like a spicy butter chicken curry to warm your belly, or a warm hearty soup. Alumni, Zandile Makhoba is an ambitious woman of many talents. Not only is she an internationally recognised Chef, but she is also an Entrepreneur and Food Columnist for the Ilanga Newspaper If you’re a regular reader of this newspaper you would’ve noticed that Chef Zandi has been sharing her foodie tips, tricks and recipe’s that will make cooking for winter much easier!
A Social Entrepreneur at heart which has been involved in various Projects for community upliftment. She is specialist on this, last year she graduated from JCI Academy in Japan with a Diploma in Cross-Cultural Leadership. Zandile’s passion for the industry has driven her to launch her own Corporate Social Investment Project called ‘From the Garden to the Table’ which has made her to be selected as one of the 2019 Champions which is a program run by University of KwaZulu-Natal ( Graduate School of Business & Leadership) and Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. The aim of this project is to educate the youth and women on how to use sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty, and to eat healthy. Now let’s rewind the clock to 2012, that was the year of new beginnings, the brand “Zandi The Chef International” was born by opening her own company. While studying Culinary Arts Programme at the International Hotel School, Zandile was able to complete her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) at some of the top hotels in Durban. One of them was the Protea Hotel Durban Edward, working under the wing of Executive Chef Stanley Skosana. Another qualification that Zandile holds is a Bachelor of Social Science Degree in Psychology and Business Management, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Science Studies majoring in Community Development and Policy Development. Both qualifications were obtained with the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
There have been many moments that have changed and shaped Zandi’s life. Some of them include conducting live cooking demonstrations in the National Artisan and Career Festival, participating in the food and culture program in Japan, where she cooked African Cuisine and learnt about Japanese cuisine. She is currently a brand influencer Chef for Sulumlomo Tuesdays which is a lifestyle brand for celebrities, entrepreneurs and those who are seeking to network with a purpose over good food, drinks, networking and games. Watch out for her upcoming shows where she will be cooking different cuisines. Catch her in the HAPPI Festival (September), Soweto Kota Festival (September) and PMB Food Festival (October). There’s no stopping this woman with an ambition to build an empire and stretch her wings Globally.
We asked Chef Zandi is she had a message or inspiration for the youth of South Africa, “no matter your circumstances, or where you come from, you can become anything you dream of. Look at the tools that you currently have in your life and see how those tools can get you to where you want to be. Don’t limit yourself, who knew that I would one day become a chef, entrepreneur and food columnist. She believes in empowering others as she would say, service to humanity is the best work of life.
