Nicola Alberts is an 18-year-old Milnerton resident and winner of the Cape Town bursary in The International Hotel School Bursary Competition in 2012.
Nicola is a free spirited individual with a strong personality, who is always open for new opportunities and loves meeting new people. Her passion for the hospitality industry started from the age of 16, where she worked in restaurants and B&B’s on weekends to earn pocket money.
After winning the bursary, Nicola was excited to finish Matric knowing what lay ahead of her. She enrolled at The International Hotel School this year and is currently in her first year at the Cape Town campus studying towards a three year Hospitality Management Diploma.
When I was announced as the winner, I was nervous and excited at the same time. It really feels good when you accomplish such a big goal that you set for yourself,” she says.
What does she love most about IHS?
I love that IHS focuses on you as an individual and they always strive to be better and keep an open mind about everything, I really like that,” she adds.
Nicola would encourage other learners to enter the bursary competition as she says, “it’s such an amazing opportunity and even if you don't win the bursary you gain so much experience and other people may take notice of you and even offer you a job.”
In the next few years, she is aiming to go overseas for her third year 6 month practical, complete her diploma and work her way up to managerial positions in popular hotels. Her career goal would be to take on the position as General Manger of her own hotel.
