2012 Bursary Competition

The International Hotel School is proud to announce that it is once again running its annual Bursary Competition. The winner in each campus will win their tuition fees for any IHS programme they wish to study in, for the duration of the programme, valued up to R180 000!!!Natalia in the kitchen

We are looking for finalists who are passionate about the industry and have what it takes to make it to the top.

So, how does it work?

  • The competition is open to Matric students only
  • The learners have to complete a number of projects and assignments and submit them to The International Hotel School before the closing date.
  • From these applications we will select Semi Finalists who will then take part in our panel interviews where we will select our Finalists
  • Finalists then take part in a 5 day work experience at a hotel where they are part of the staff for that week and work in every department in the hotel.  They are then judged according to how they did in these departments and as a whole.
  • The winner in each campus will then be awarded the Grand Prize of Tuition Fees paid in full for the IHS programme of their choice, valued at up to R180 000!!
  • There are 3 winners – one from each campus (Durban, Sandton and Cape Town).

How to enter

  1. Each entrant needs job shadow or work in a hospitality environment for at least 3 days.
  2. Each entrant needs to complete one of the projects listed below, and submit the project with the cover sheet provided.
  3. Application Forms, the project and job shadowing/work experience documentation need to be sent to the campus you are applying at by 31 May 2012.
  4. Semi Finalists will then be chosen and notified by the campus.

We promise you it will be worth the effort and we hope to see you in the finals.

Projects and Requirements

Job shadowing / work experience

  • Every entrant needs to show that they have worked or job shadowed in a hospitality environment for at least 3 days
  • Hospitality environments include:Elouise performing front of desk duties.
    • Restaurants
    • B &B’s
    • Hotels
    • Coffee Shops
    • Night Clubs
    • Bar man
    • Waitress
    • Housekeeper
    • Guest relations
    • Receptionist
    • Event management
    • and many more.
  • You need to detail the following:
    • Name of the property where you did the work experience or job shadow
    • Name of the person who was in charge of you during that time
    • Name and contact details of the General Manager / Owner
    • Detail of what you did during that time
    • A written reference from the person you worked for.
  • This has to be handed in with your project.

Projects

You must choose and complete one of the following projects:

  • Nhlanhla and Dedré hard at work in the kitchenCook a 2 course meal. The budget for the meal is R100 for 4 people. The meal can be a starter and main meal or a main meal and a dessert. You need to plan the menu, provide a costing (how you used the budget), and take photos of the food. These must all be submitted with the project. Projects will be judged on budget, menu planning and original work. Project cover sheets are available at the end of this document to assist you with what is needed for the project. A cover sheet must be attached to your project when you submit it.
  • Plan a function or an event (golf tournament, a birthday party, matric dance, a theme party, a dinner for friends, an exhibition etc). You do NOT have to hold the event – you only need to PLAN it. The project needs to detail the full plan of the event detailing the timing (what you would do and when), the menus, the table décor, invitations, and all the logistics of the event. Project cover sheets are available at the end of this document to assist you with what is needed for the project. A cover sheet must be attached to your project when you submit it.

Rules

The following rules pertain to the IHS schools bursary competition and do not include rules for the semi-final and final stages of this competition:

  • Justin helps out with the laundryEntrants may only apply at ONE campus.
  • The Competition is available to South African residents only
  • All entrants must be at least 18 in first year of study at IHS
  • Participating learners must be completing Matric/National Senior Certificate in 2012 with good English communication skills
  • No specific Matric subjects required for entry.
  • As English is the language in which our curriculum is taught and tested, all projects need to be in English and interviews will be conducted in English
  • Participating learners must complete an entry form, and submit it, with all the documentation required to the campus they are applying at. Failure to complete a registration form or submitting the required projects, will result in disqualification.
  • Participating learners may only enter ONE project, once. Multiple entries will not be accepted.
  • The entry deadlines are fixed and any late entries will not be accepted.
  • Participating learners must be available and willing to participate in the regional semi-finals and finals should they be selected to do so.
  • Learners must submit a project from the list indicated. No other project will be accepted.
  • Learners who copy or plagiarize will be disqualified.
  • The judge’s decision is final.
  • Sandra working in Front OfficePortfolios must reach The International Hotel School campus at which you are entering, by 31 May 2012.
  • The competition closes 31 May 2012. No late entries will be accepted.
  • All semi-finalists will participate in a competition based at each regional IHS campus that includes a panel interview with members from the industry. 5 finalists are selected in each region from that competition and put forward to BOOT CAMP 2012, which will be held during the October School holidays.
  • The 5 finalists will spend a week competing in ‘Boot Camp’ at one of the partner hotels. (The finalists will be accommodated at the hotel.)
  • The hotel management will put the finalists ‘through their paces’ for the week i.e. finalists spend a day working in each department and have to complete set tasks that are measured or judged. A strict set of judging criteria will be used to come up with one bursary winner in each region. The judges’ decision is final.
  • Learners and Schools who participate will receive local newspaper and radio coverage during the semi-finals of the bursary competition in each region and winners will be profiled on the IHS website during 2012/3.
